NORTH AUSTIN. This circus-themed bar gets props just for being quirky. They only serve beer, but they do provide set-ups, so you can bring your own liquor. Local bands take the stage (backed by a large pink elephant) on Tuesdays and from Thursdays through Saturdays. True to its independent nature, Carousel closes at midnight, so it's better to start your evening here than try to end it.

NORTH AUSTIN. A great source of fun, Dallas really packs them in, and the dance floor stays busy all night long, whether you're tuned in to Keith Urban and Gretchen Wilson or the renegade Vanilla Ice flashback tune. A mixed crowd mingles effortlessly, as do novice dancers and more accomplished folks. Several bars take care of drink orders, and you can also score beer from stand-alone troughs or shots from roaming servers. If you need something quieter in the midst of the motion, try your hand at pool, or simply take advantage of terrific people-watching opportunities. Affordable and fun.

CONGRESS AVENUE. Super-trendy Light Bar sports chic industrial decor, water walls, massaging chairs, and a rooftop patio with terrific views. At roughly 4000 square feet, the club is big enough to accommodate plenty of partiers without feeling overly crowded. Inventive specialty cocktails are on the menu, along with fun themed parties several nights a week.

6TH STREET. This elegant restaurant features classical Spanish cuisine, with a fusion of Mediterranean and European tastes. Choices might include Valencian paella, risottos, and bouillabaisse. Extensive wine list and excellent desserts. After dinner, head for the sophisticated cigar room that boasts a nice selection of single-malt whiskeys and premium brandies. Located in the historic Littlefield Building.

WAREHOUSE DISTRICT. This sophisticated wine and tapas bar offers a cozy atmosphere with hardwood floors and intimate tables overlooking a lovely courtyard. It's a great place for meeting up with friends or colleagues and sharing a few savory dishes from the scrumptious menu. Try garlic-sauteed shrimp, grilled sea scallops, crawfish cakes, fried chicken ravioli, and salmon marinated in adobo sauce. A variety of wines is available by the bottle or glass, along with a handful of specialty drinks. Live jazz is an added occasional perk.
